A rivalry most notable for its results on the gridiron will renew itself in Gainesville on Saturday when the Volunteers head into the hardwood version of the “Swamp” to tangle with the Gators.
There are few teams as hot as the Gators. They are 16-2 and 5-0 in conference. For as much publicity as Kentucky has received this season, the SEC title may very well go through Gainesville.
Tennessee comes off a hard fought home win Wednesday against Arkansas. They dominated on the defensive end down the stretch and got to the free throw line an outstanding 38 times.
Coming up with similar offensive efficiency here will be difficult given what Florida does in terms of on ball defense. Scottie Wilbekin and Co. are relentless and excellent in staying in front of the ball and communicating.
While Tennessee has a plethora of athleticism at the wing positions and down low, their biggest concern this year has been at the point slot. Memphis transfer Antonio Barton has been solid thus far this year. He has minimized turnovers and handled pressure well.
But keeping this one tight on the road will require him to do more, and I’m not sure he’s good enough. Florida has a ton of athletes to bang with Tennessee’s talented forwards here. They also have much better guard play and depth, and those are the primary reasons they are currently 8.5 point favorites after the number initially opened up at nine.
All the numbers and metrics out there point to Florida warranting a spread more in line with seven than 8.5/9. But that is a testimony to the respect both Vegas and gamblers alike are paying to Billy Donovan’s club these days. Florida plays with incredible passion and consistency defensively, and Tennessee could struggle in both handling the defensive pressure and getting to the basket when necessary.
The number here indicates there is value on the visitor, but I do not buy into it. Still, this will be an excellent test for the Vols. They are a tournament worthy club, but still need to do some work this season to reach that sort of goal. Competing down in Gainesville will be a great measuring stick in that regard.
